The Benefits of Massage for insomnia
"(The) inability to fall asleep or remain asleep for an adequate length of time so that tiredness is virtually permanent. Insomnia can be associated with disease, particularly if there are painful symptoms, but is more often caused by worry."
Our bodies recover during rest, and deep sleep is a particularly effective and necessary form of rest. Lack of sleep will run down the immune system, leaving you susceptible to illness and disease. Depending on how chronic the nature of the insomnia, you should notice immediate effects dropping into a deep relaxation during the session, and hopefully experiencing a good nights sleep within 1 to 3 sessions.
Thai Massage is effective cure for insomnia because it helps you focus on what is present for your body. This allows you to drop your mind's worries and be tired, happy, sad, tense, relaxed or whatever sensation is there and present for you.
I have an informal relaxed approach and tend to follow the Thai system of starting on the feet and working towards the head. This is initially very grounding, which can sometimes be enough to cure insomnia in itself! In addition, the thorough nature of Thai Massage, including work on the stomach if that is comfortable for the client, (a major emotional centre, left out by many therapists & forms of bodywork) and deep breathe work (which helps connect the conscious & subconscious); allows us to find and work through things with or without haviing to put everything into words!
